Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on the set of "Rust," is set to receive her sentence on Monday for the fatal shooting incident that occurred in 2021.

Today, in a New Mexico state court, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for "Rust" who was convicted last month of involuntary manslaughter in the tragic shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, faces sentencing. She could receive up to 18 months in prison for her involvement in the 2021 incident, which experts have deemed preventable. During Gutierrez-Reed's sentencing hearing, which commenced at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning in Santa Fe, emotional testimonies were given by Joel Souza, the writer and director of "Rust," Craig Mizrahi, Hutchins' former agent, and several of her friends. Souza highlighted the profound loss experienced by Hutchins' family, expressing the impossibility of restoring what was taken from them. Mizrahi and Emilia Mendieta, identified as Hutchins' close friend, shared personal stories about Hutchins, emphasizing her promising career trajectory before her untimely death.

Mizrahi criticized Gutierrez-Reed's and "Rust" leadership's handling of safety protocols, suggesting that decisions made regarding staffing and safety prioritization contributed to the tragedy. Mendieta echoed these sentiments, describing Hutchins' death as a result of systemic failures and emphasizing the need for accountability in maintaining workplace safety standards within the industry.

Attorney Gloria Allred read a statement from Hutchins' mother, Olga, expressing the ongoing pain of losing a child. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter last month, with additional charges of evidence tampering resulting in acquittal. Despite plans for an appeal, subsequent requests for a new trial or conditional release were denied by the state. Prosecutors sought the maximum sentence, emphasizing Gutierrez-Reed's alleged lack of remorse and negligence during the trial.

Additional felony charges related to weapons handling and illegal substance possession in New Mexico are pending against Gutierrez-Reed, further complicating her legal situation. The trial revealed discrepancies regarding the presence of live ammunition on set and highlighted Gutierrez-Reed's responsibility in managing firearm safety protocols. Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding how live ammunition found its way into the prop gun that resulted in Hutchins' death.
